The Sons of Veterans of the Civil War was an auxiliary to the Grand Army of the Republic. The SV not only assisted aging GAR veterans but also maintained an armed militia that was a part of the Army Reserve in the same manner as other US militia units.

The sack coat has a great lining but is missing the tag that was originally over one of the pockets. The jacket retains all buttons in fair shape, with four being Sons of Veterans of the Civil War buttons and the middle 5th button being a Federal U.S. button, likely done by the soldier during the period to show he was part of a militia. The jacket has blue Corporal chevrons on each sleeve, for an infantry corporal.

The 4 Sons of Veterans of the Civil War buttons are marked for A.P.
