Only One Available. This is an interesting Indian Wars Era uniform variation- what we believe to be an update to the 1872/75 Officer’s Sack Coat, also known as the fatigue blouse. The blouse was first introduced in 1872, with the mohair braid, and slashes at the hip to allow the use of the sword hanger, as the belt was worn underneath the blouse.

This blouse falls into a period just after the discontinuation of the side slashes, and the 1875 blouse which dropped the mohair braid, and slashes altogether. This example is heavily worn and has extensive moth damage, but has a very beautiful and intricate cuff rank braid, otherwise known as “Chicken Gut” ranks, which differs from the traditional style of rank, where an added layer of braid denoted a rank higher. This example appears to add another section of the same braid higher on the coat. From the number of sections we can see, we believe this example to denote a Colonel.

The buttons are similar to that of the M1895 Sack Coat, so we believe this example dates to the late 1870s/early 1880s. There is very little if any reference to Officer’s sack coats during this period, so this is the furthest we are able to explain. There appears to have been a maker’s tag on the interior pocket at one point, but it is gone. As mentioned, there is extensive moth damage to the uniform, but it is the only example like it we have ever encountered.

We likely won’t see one like this again, so don’t miss out. Comes ready for further research and display.

Approximate Measurements:-
Collar to shoulder: 9.5"
Shoulder to sleeve: 26”
Shoulder to shoulder: 13.5"
Chest width: 18.5”
Waist: 17.5"
Front length: 32.5"

https://www.ima-usa.com/products/original-u-s-indian-wars-m1872-75-or-later-officer-s-patrol-sack-coat-with-intricate-cuff-chicken-gut-ranks-possibly-colonel
