This is a very attractive original U.S. Indian Wars era Model 1860 Staff and Field Officer sword with etched blade and steel scabbard, retailed or supplied by The Warnock Co. of New York, N.Y. The Model 1860 was adopted as an officer’s sword during the Civil War period and continued in service through the postwar decades, when it became particularly associated with the dress and ceremonial equipment of U.S. Army officers. This example displays the ornate construction and etched decoration typical of privately purchased officer swords of the later 19th century.

Although it is an edged weapon, this post-war version of the M1860 sword was primarily intended for use in ceremonies. The blade, measuring 30 inches in length, is straight, double-edged, and has a diamond-shaped cross-section. This is an early Indian Wars example, so there is no folding guard. The blade is adorned on both sides with etched foliate and a military panoply of arms. The blade has some heavy age discoloration spots and oxidation, particularly towards the bottom. The guard is a bit loose but will not come off. Steel scabbard has a good, dark gray/brown patina and is adorned with two brass mounts and a brass drag; the brass throat is missing, but the blade still sheathes. Both mounts exhibit a floral display.
