Rather than a regulation Civil War Model 1860 officer’s sword, this is a later veterans’ organization sword produced in the broad military-association style that Ames continued to manufacture for decades after the war.

This sword was made for a member of Post 76 of the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.), a veteran's organization made up of Union Soldiers from the civil war. The hilt is in fantastic condition overall. The handle is still tight on the tang, as is the guard, and the lack of a handguard is a great design choice. The brass mounted dark finished steel scabbard is very nice, and still retains some of the original finish, with the balance showing a lightly oxidized patina. The brass fittings have simple foliate designs, with a star and crossed flags on the drag. The chape has the GAR symbol with a Navy anchor and 3 rifles with a US Marked bag around it. Great piece.

With its POST 76 G.A.R. / COLLINGWOOD blade etching, Ames Sword Co. Chicopee marking, ornate GAR shell guard, brass military motifs, and complete brass-mounted scabbard, this is a particularly strong piece of Union veterans’ material culture. It would fit especially well in a collection focused on the Grand Army of the Republic, Massachusetts Civil War veterans, postwar Union commemorative organizations, Ames swords, or the long social afterlife of the Civil War.

Dimensions:
Blade length: 28 1/4”
Overall length: 33 3/4”
Handguard: 5”W x 5 1/2”L
Scabbard length: 31"

https://www.ima-usa.com/products/original-u-s-grand-army-of-the-republic-gar-post-76-m1860-style-officer-sword-with-scabbard-by-ames-sword-company-collingwood
