One-of-a-Kind. Some of the most sought-after handmade fighting knives are those of Richard Batson, who worked part-time making knives while serving in the Army from 1958-1970, mainly for active duty personnel. He continued making knives until roughly 2013, and is renowned for his craftsmanship and attention to detail. This example is one of the nicest Batson knife we’ve ever come across, and has fantastic blade etching for the 75th Ranger Regiment, which has seen extremely heavy combat during the Global War on Terror. This knife bears Rixeyville, Virginia on the ricasso, meaning it was manufactured after 1993, when Batson moved there. It was likely made around 1993-1996. This example came to us from the Larry Thomas American Edged Weapon Museum in Intercourse, Pennsylvania, further cementing its authenticity and prestige.

The knife has a double-edged blade similar to that of the U.S. Model 1918 Mark I Trench Knife, measuring 7½” long. The ricasso is carefully etched:

R. G. On this side of the blade is an etched RANGER scroll over the shield of the 75th Ranger Regiment, depicting a lightning bolt between a sun and star. The polished black wooden grip is in fantastic order with stacked black, red, and white spacers at each end. The crossguard & pommel are both brass, and there are two holes at the ends of the crossguard. The pointed pommel cap has a hole which retains the original leather thong. The overall length of the knife is 12¾”.

The original and correct leather sheath is stamped on the back:

CUSTOM MADE
AT
SULLIVANS
TAMPA, FLA.
BY GUTCHER

This is the original sheath for the knife, and has heavy verdigris on the brass rivets.
