This is a genuine U.S. military issue M9 bayonet manufactured by Lan-Cay, complete with its original multipurpose scabbard and an especially interesting Fort Benning inspection tag. The bayonet shows substantial service use and was officially tagged as Condition Code F, “Unserviceable (Reparable),” making this a particularly compelling issued example rather than an unused commercial piece.

The M9 bayonet was adopted by the U.S. military in the 1980s as a multipurpose bayonet and field knife. In addition to its conventional cutting blade, the design incorporated a sawback spine and a scabbard system that could be combined with the blade to form a wire cutter.

This is a genuine USGI Government issue M9 Bayonet manufactured under the later Government contract by Lan-Cay. It is offered in excellent condition. Features include blackened blade, saw tooth milled spine, molded thermoplastic nylon grip and incorporated set of wire cutters formed by the knife and scabbard combined. This example does not have the small pouch on the front of the Phrobis-made examples.

This example shows service use and comes with an attached inspection tag signed by an inspector officer at Fort Benning, who designated the bayonet with condition code F, for “UNSERVICEABLE (REPARABLE)”. This includes “Economically reparable materiel which requires repair, overhaul, or reconditioning; includes reparable items which are radioactively contaminated.” Indeed, the tip of the blade is broken off and there is general service wear across the bayonet, with heavy wear across the scabbard. The ricasso is stamped:

M9
LAN-CAY
U.S.A.

The connection point for the attachment to a rifle is still functional. The original scabbard shows heavy scuffing to the body with a whetstone embedded into the back of it which now shows breakage and loss. The buckle is retained with marking on the back for T.W. NEXUS of Wood Dale, Illinois.

The combination of the Lan-Cay manufacture, genuine military issue construction, broken blade tip, Fort Benning inspection tag, Condition Code F designation, heavily worn scabbard, damaged sharpening stone, and T.W. Nexus hardware makes this a particularly interesting service-used M9 set. Rather than an unissued example, it preserves clear evidence of actual military handling, inspection, and disposition during the long Cold War and Global War on Terror-era service life of the M9 bayonet.

Dimensions:
Blade Length: 7 1/8"
Scabbard Length: 14 5/8"
Overall Length: 12 1/8"

https://www.ima-usa.com/products/original-u-s-cold-war-gwot-m9-lan-cay-bayonet-with-m10-wire-cutter-scabbard-fort-benning-inspection-tag
