One-of-a-Kind. This is an outstanding original Cold War-era Sikorsky Aircraft concept art painting by Andrew “Andy” Whyte, depicting the proposed Sikorsky S-66 compound attack helicopter developed for the U.S. Army’s Advanced Aerial Fire Support System, or AAFSS, competition during the mid-1960s.

Whyte had a long career with Sikorsky Aircraft, joining the company in 1952 and retiring in 1992. He spent much of that career working in preliminary and advanced design and became closely associated with the visual presentation of both production and conceptual Sikorsky aircraft. His artwork helped translate experimental engineering ideas into finished presentation images, including aircraft that never progressed beyond the design stage.

The Sikorsky Historical Archives documents Whyte’s involvement with the S-66 program and reproduces an S-66 isometric cutaway drawing by Andy Whyte, confirming his direct association with the visual development and presentation of this experimental aircraft concept. Andy always had an interest in the history of the aviation industry. In the 1960s he worked with United Aircraft executives in setting up displays at what was to become the New England Air Museum. In 1995 Andy became the tenth member of the Sikorsky Historical Archives, following the founding members and the four Sikorsky brothers.

This is an outstanding concept art painting of the Sikorsky S-66, a conceptual compound helicopter designed and proposed by Sikorsky Aircraft in the mid-1960s for the U.S. Army's Advanced Aerial Fire Support System (AAFSS) program. The board measures 20 x 30” and the helicopter only takes up the middle portion of the board. The helicopter has US Army insignia and a crossed sword shield insignia at the side.

The painting depicts the Sikorsky S-66, an advanced compound helicopter proposed for the U.S. Army’s AAFSS program. The Army sought a new high-speed armed aircraft capable of providing substantially greater performance than the armed UH-1 helicopters then being used in Vietnam. Sikorsky’s proposal employed a tandem cockpit, conventional articulated main rotor, auxiliary wing surfaces, and a highly unusual propulsion system known as the Rotoprop.

The Rotoprop was one of the S-66’s most distinctive features. In hover, it functioned as a conventional tail rotor for anti-torque control. For high-speed forward flight, the assembly could rotate approximately 90 degrees and act as a pusher propeller, turning the aircraft into a compound helicopter. The concept was intended to combine the hovering capability of a conventional helicopter with significantly improved forward speed.

Sikorsky and Lockheed were selected from a larger field of manufacturers to proceed into the formal AAFSS project-definition phase. Sikorsky submitted its S-66 proposal in 1965, but the Army ultimately selected Lockheed’s competing design, which developed into the AH-56 Cheyenne. The S-66 therefore remained a conceptual aircraft rather than entering prototype production.

The artwork is signed in the bottom left corner with Andrew Whyte’s stylized signature.

The combination of the Andrew Whyte signature, direct Sikorsky provenance, S-66 AAFSS subject matter, U.S. Army presentation markings, and large 20 x 30-inch format makes this an exceptional surviving piece of original aerospace concept art. Because the S-66 never entered production, contemporary artwork such as this provides an especially valuable visual record of one of Sikorsky’s most ambitious Cold War-era experimental helicopter proposals.

https://www.ima-usa.com/products/original-u-s-cold-war-andy-whyte-sikorsky-corporation-experimental-s-66-compound-helicopter-concept-art-painting-20-x-30
