Original U.S. Civil War Spencer Saddle Ring Carbine with Stabler Cut-off - Serial Number 18347

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very interesting Spencer Model 1860 Civil War Carbine with Serial number of 18347, indicating 1864 manufacture. It is in very nice condition, and functions great with decent bore: clear lands and grooves with mostly bright finish. Metal finish is good with a great patina of age.

From Spencer's initial order for 7,500 Carbines, 7,000 were supplied by December 1863 and the balance in early 1864. With renewed orders Spencer delivered a further 34,500 Carbines in 1864 alone.

The March 1865 incorporation of the Stabler cut-off attachment,  invented by Edward Stabler of Sandy Springs, Md, allowed the carbine to be fired as a single-shot with the seven cartridges in the magazine being held in reserve. Stabler was paid a royalty of 25 cents for each carbine fabricated with his magazine cut-off device. The Government then authorized Springfield Armory to convert just 12,000 existing N-1860 Carbines to incorporate the specifications of the later Model 1865 Spencer Carbine of a 20" barrel, down from 22" and the new Stabler cut-off. These were then issued after the war for Cavalry use in the West.

Our example is in a really nice overall condition however the Spencer markings on the top face of the receiver are mostly worn away although on the left side they can be seen. The serial number is clear and behind the hammer and the walnut butt stock bears a very clear Army Inspector's cartouche stamping.

A very fine Spencer Carbine with an interesting history.
