Now this is a rare bird! This is a very nice example of the rarely seen U.S. Naval Model 1860 Boarding Cutlass, as used from 1860-1865. The boarding cutlass was derived from the French pattern of 1833, often referred to as a “cullere a pot,” or more commonly called the “soup ladle” weapon. It features all brass mounts and a wood grip with almost all of the original leather present. The guard of this example, and others we have seen, was coated with lacquer to improve the appearance and protect it, with some of this getting on the blade ricasso.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe 26 inch blade is in very good condition, with a bright finish with just a bit of oxidation staining in places. The edge is a bit rough due to some light denting. Brass bowl hand guard showing signs of its very rare ORIGINAL tin plating, surrounding the grooved wooden grip.
