Co. with Leather Scabbard - Dated 1862

Original Item: Only One Available. Now this is a rare bird! This is a very nice example of the rarely seen U.S. Naval Cutlass, as used from 1860-1865. The boarding cutlass was derived from the French pattern of 1833, often referred to as a “cullere a pot,” or more commonly called the “soup ladle” weapon. It features all brass mounts, a wood with leather wrapped sword grip, and a nice brass-fitted leather scabbard. The leather of the grip is completely intact, and in good shape with a nice coating, though the original twisted brass wire wrap is completely missing, as is the leather blade washer/buffer.

The curved 26 inch blade's ricasso is marked on one side with the banner style address, which is partly faded, but still legible -

MADE BY
AMES MFG
CHICOPEE
MASS

One the other side it is marked-

U.S.N.
D.R.
1862

There is also a Navy "Anchor" proof over P / G G, the naval inspector's marks. The blade is in good shape, however it has definitely been cleaned, and looks to have been etched and chrome plated to preserve it, probably at some time during the 20th century. There is an additional inspector D.R. mark on the pommel, indicating inspection by Daniel Reynolds, one of many inspectors working at Ames during the U.S. Civil War. The underside of the guard is marked with rack number 2 4 M / 2 8. The guard as a whole looks like it may have at one time been lacquered to improve the appearance, however most has worn off.

The included leather scabbard is in very nice condition, with the expected wear from service and age. It still has most of the original black finish, though it is cracking in places, and the brass fittings are oxidized, with light denting. The scabbards usually rotted away and are very seldom seen. This scabbard is certainly period manufactured but not the typical type seen with the Ames produced cutlass as it does not have rivets down the back side.

Offered in very nice collector's condition, original Civil War Naval Cutlasses are getting harder and harder to find every year!
