Item Description
Original Items: One of a Kind. Snuff boxes were very popular personal items throughout the 19th Century all over the world. The items first became popular in 17th Century England, for holding "snuff", scented powdered tobacco inhaled through the nose. It then spread throughout Europe and into the New World.
This is a lovely Cast Pewter "Snuff Box", made in the image of a small European style double barreled Flintlock Pocket Pistol. This example measures 4 1/4"L x 1 1/2"W x 2"H, and has a brass lidded compartment on the bottom. The cover is engraved with the name of the owner, who was apparently given it as a gift:-
Lieut. Ernest Portis
42 ALA. Regt.
1863
from E.A.
We have done some preliminary searching, and other items from Lt. Portis have been offered previously, so there is definitely lots of research potential in this item.
