One-of-a-Kind. This is an ornate & high-grade M1840 Cavalry Officer’s Presentation saber likely presented to a high-ranking officer during the Civil War. The sword’s hilt is entirely of gilded brass, with the grip being meticulously-patterned, and the side of the pommel bearing a bust of Columbia. The hilt has intricate floral designs covering the branches, guard, and underside of the crossguard.

The sword is well-modeled after the popular M-1840 “Wristbreaker” Cavalry saber, and is without a doubt the most extravagant example of this saber we have ever offered.

The 35 ⅞” curved blade is triple-etched on the first 2/3rds of its length, with both sides terminating in a Halberd head. One side bears an outstanding Federal Eagle with "E PLURIBUS / UNUM" on scrolls above and below it. This side also bears a cacophony of arms and floral designs. The bottom of this side has a small circular marking with the letter ‘S’ in six quadrants. This may be a hint towards a maker. The opposite side bears a US Shield surrounded by arms, with a Cornucopia at the bottom and floral designs in between. The spine has small floral etchings, and the blade is still tight to the hilt thanks to the floral-cut leather blade buffer. The most wear is seen at the top of the crossguard, where some of the gilding is worn away. The overall length of the sword is 41 ⅝”.

The only noticeable damage to the sword itself is a very small crack near the tip of the crossguard, but this is not serious.

The sword bears no maker’s markings, but the blade at least is certainly of German origin. The meticulous design of the eagle and US shield are of the best we have ever encountered.

The original steel scabbard bears gorgeous brass mounts, with the throat and drag being beautifully etched with floral motifs. Both suspension rings are retained, molded into twisted rope, as their mounts bear berries & leaves with the top mount retaining the bushel attached. The lower mount originally had this same bushel, but as shown it is now gone. Between the two mounts is an ovular brass border molded into rope that likely originally had a presentation plaque engraved within. The scabbard measures 37¼”.

It is not often that a Civil War sword of this caliber finds its way into the open market. This is one of the most unique & attractive examples we have ever offered. It comes ready to serve as a centerpiece of any American sword collection.

Dimensions:
Blade length: 35 7/8”
Overall length: 41 5/8”
Handguard: 5”x 5”
Scabbard Length: 37 1/4"

https://www.ima-usa.com/products/original-u-s-civil-war-outstanding-officer-s-presentation-sword-scabbard-with-gilded-brass-hilt-german-made-blade-with-meticulous-federal-eagle-etching
