Original U.S. Civil War Model 1861 Leather Cartridge Box with Inner Tins - Marked Newark N.J.
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a genuine Pattern 1861 pattern Federal issue leather cartridge box for .58 caliber. Outer flap has light surface wear with a latch tab that is attached by straight line stitching and a brass rivet. The tab hole is a bit worn, but still intact without tears, and fits nicely around the large brass stud on the bottom of the box.
The rear of the box still has both belt loops intact, as well as the loops for the shoulder strap, which is not included. The box is marked with inspector stamp L.L.T. and below this is a faded maker marking:
??? & CO
We unfortunately cannot make out the first part of the maker name, but on these cases finding ANY markings is an achievement. The interior flap is in very good condition and is complete with both ears. Both tins are present, with only minor oxidation. The bottom of the box has both roller buckles, though the stitching on one is partly missing. The front of the box has two slots on either side of the U.S., indicating that it did at one time have a front plate, now missing.
Offered in overall very good condition with signs of use and age. Ready to display
