This is a very interesting Yataghan bayonet that we are having some trouble narrowing down to an exact model. It is similar to the Model 1842 Saber Bayonet, the Mississippi Rifle bayonet, and the Type II M1855 bayonet, but none are exact. Some information online showed it could be a Brazilian or US export but no one could identify it with full confidence. So it is being sold “as-is”.

The blade is in great condition, mostly grey with areas of dark staining. Many countries, including the United States, Belgium, and Germany, copied and used these bayonets. On the ricasso, there is a Crown over "H" mark. The saber bears the markings of PDL, which stands for Peter Daniel Lunescloss from Solingen, a well-known manufacturer from Solingen, the German “ city of the blades''.This bayonet has a brass grip on the right side with a spring steel latching arrangement and a button on the left. The US Imported lots of swords, enlisted men and Officers from Solingen as well as France and England. The letter W is stamped over the PDL marking, which may be a clue to identifying this bayonet’s exact use.

Overall length of the bayonet is 27 1/4 inches, with a 22 ½ inch "Yataghan '' style saber blade. This term is derived from the Turkish word for "one who lays down," to describe the downward-sweeping double-curve blade profile. The double-curve added strength and rigidity, while keeping the hilt and point in alignment for thrusting efficiency. It features the ribbed brass handle and leaf spring attachment later used on the M1866 bayonet for the Chassepot Rifle.

The French-style bayonet measures 23 ⅛” and is not marked anywhere. There is some denting near the tip.

A very interesting bayonet, ready for further research and display.

Specifications:
Blade length: 22 1/2”
Overall length: 27 1/4”
Crossguard: 4 ⅜”
Scabbard length: 23 1/8”

https://www.ima-usa.com/products/original-u-s-civil-war-model-1842-saber-bayonet-with-scabbard-by-pdl-of-solingen
