Roby & Co. was one of the manufacturers of Swords used before and during the Civil War. They were one of the smaller manufactures, but still made fine quality swords, and could me made to order, such as this one was.

Condition of the sword is in "relic condition", and it is offered without the original scabbard, which was lost long ago. The original grip covering looks to have been sharkskin, which is all but gone, with just a trace at the base, where there is also a bit of the original wrapping. The grip is otherwise bare wood.

The hilt is of brass, and unfortunately has sustained some bending to the guard and cross guard. It was based on a French pattern. Though other swords were by regulation allowed, this model was by far the most popular sword carried by officers during the American Civil War.
