This Civil War cased \"Ninth Plate\" (2 x 2.5 inch) tintype portrait shows an officer, Lieutenant Trout, of the Lancaster Independent Troop (Cavalry), likely before he became a lieutenant. He wears a bummer hat or kepi and a lovely Pattern 1858 frock coat of Union issue with a US Belt \u0026amp; cartridge box with plate. He is holding an 1842 Springfield percussion cap rifle.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe image is behind glass held in an ornate brass mat loaded with intricate designs edging the tintype. A leatherette case molded front and back with an ornate pattern. Interior of the case is lined in velvet type material. The locking mechanism is still present on both parts of the case, and it functions as intended.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt came with a small note attached reading \u003cstrong\u003eLt Trout \/ Grandfather’s Co.\u003c\/strong\u003e, and a more modern note with some further information on the unit, the Lancaster Independent Troop. The captain was C.B. Hebble, and Joseph Umble was the color bearer. Like the ambrotype, tintypes were often hand-colored.
