One-of-a-Kind. This is an ornate & high-grade M1840 Cavalry Officer’s Presentation saber likely presented to a high-ranking officer during the Civil War. The sword’s hilt is entirely of gilded brass except for the grip which is gorgeous sterling silver. The hilt has intricate floral designs covering the branches, guard, and underside of the crossguard.

The sword is well-modeled after the popular M-1840 “Wristbreaker” Cavalry saber, and is without a doubt one of the most extravagant examples of this saber we have ever offered.

The 35 1/2” curved blade is double-etched on the first 2/3rds of its length, with both sides bearing crossed flags with the motto STAND BY THE UNION, an outstanding and iconic phrase for the period of its manufacture. One side bears an outstanding Federal Eagle with "E PLURIBUS / UNUM" on scrolls above and below it. The other side has what looks to be a soldier’s initials, but we can’t say for sure. Both sides bear a depiction of the “Liberty Cap” The blade is still tight to the hilt thanks to the leather blade buffer. The most wear is seen at the top of the crossguard, where some of the gilding is worn away. The overall length of the sword is 41 ⅝”.

The ricasso is stamped:

W. There are some very small spots of pitting but nothing serious.

The blade has been kept well-preserved but is a bit sticky from oil. The original steel scabbard bears gorgeous brass mounts, with all three being beautifully etched with floral motifs. Both suspension rings are retained, as their mounts bear berries & leaves. The scabbard measures 36 3/4”.

It is not often that a Civil War sword of this caliber finds its way into the open market. This is one of the most unique & attractive examples we have ever offered.
