Allien and Co of New York

Original Item: One-of-a-kind. In the early stages of the civil war, militias fought before standard Armies were formed. This was manufactured for use by Non-Commissioned Officers of the state militias, and was often referred to as a “Sergeants Sword”. As a whole, the sword and scabbard is in quite good condition for being almost two-hundred years old. The brass crossguard and pommel with the “Knight’s Head” and floral motif show no damage and have been tarnished due to age. The blade is believed to be an 1834 pattern with a double-edge and thin central fuller that runs the length of the blade. The steel still retains some of its original shine, with good edge and point, and lightly frosted etching. There are no solid identification marks on the sword besides the maker information:

H.V. This firm lasted until just after World War II. Allien's obituary noted that he was a member of the New York Light Guard.

The scabbard is in similar condition as the sword, showing signs of use throughout the years. The brass has tarnished over the years and the black finish on the scabbard body still covers 95% of the leather scabbard. The locket and chape (top and bottom) show no signs of damage and are still solid in construction.

Swords like this were used from the Mexican War through the Civil War.

Dimensions:
Overall Length: 36 ½”
Scabbard Length: 30”
Blade Length: 30”
Crossguard: 5 ½”

https://www.ima-usa.com/products/original-u-s-civil-war-era-model-1840-militia-nco-sword-and-scabbard-by-h-v-allien-and-co-of-new-york
