Only One Available. This is a fantastic example of a late Civil War General Officer’s double-breasted frock coat, one of the nicest we have offered. This example is fitted with Connecticut State buttons from the 1870s, so it certainly saw some post-war use. All of the buttons are backmarked with the Waterbury Button Company, of Waterbury, Connecticut.

The coat is constructed of a fine grade of English, broadcloth wool, in a deep, indigo-dyed blue. The front retains its 2 rows of 7 Connecticut buttons (one button on the right side has come off and is in the pocket), with four on the back, and the 6 small cuff buttons. The back of every button is marked to Waterbury Button Co. of Connecticut. The buttonholes are hand-whipped and corded.

The frock coat has heavy moth tracking across most of the exterior, but mostly on the back. There is no maker’s mark we can find anywhere on the frock coat. There is one interior pocket which is in good shape. There is some tearing along the middle edge next to the bottom button on the left. The frock coat still retains both set of epaulette / shoulder board mounts, but the stitching for them is very weak and each of the loop pieces is disconnected from one end.

The interior lining is in great shape for its age but does show damage as is expected, with one large tear in the lower right side. The lining of frock coats from this period are extraordinarily fragile, so please exercise caution when handling it. The moth damage to the back could be mended, but it should display very well without it. The coat exhibits a combination of treadle machine and hand sewn construction, as is correct. The collar retains one hook and latch, which still work.

An outstanding Civil War frock coat which saw use into the 1870s, ready for further research and display!

https://www.ima-usa.com/products/original-u-s-civil-war-era-connecticut-general-officer-s-double-breasted-frock-coat-with-1870s-connecticut-state-buttons
