Original U.S. Civil War Era Austrian M1849 Percussion Conversion Rifled Jaeger Musket - dated 1853
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice example of an Austrian M1849 Percussion Rifled Jaeger Musket, converted from the earlier and somewhat bizarre "Tube Lock" system. Many of these were converted and used in various revolutionary wars and conflicts in the middle of the 19th century. The M1849 in particular was exported to Italy, and these are often called "Garibaldi Rifles" due to this. This rifle however was received out of an American collection, which had not seen the light of day for 100-150 years. These were imported in large numbers, mainly by the Confederate States before the U.S. Civil War.
The rifle features a heavily rifled round to octagonal 33 inch barrel, with faded proof marks and the maker's name FRED. FRUWIRTH stamp on the breech. It also has a nice folding leaf rear sight, with a strong spring that holds it in position. The lockplate marked very faintly with partial date 853 in the Austrian fashion and the remains double headed eagle. The left side of the barrel is also marked 1853, along with other faded proof marks.
It also features brass mounts, including a "Jaeger" style trigger guard, with a nice cheek rest on the left side of the butt stock. The rifle is also Regimentally marked on the Butt Plate W.K.R.V. / C. 3. / 25., making this a great chance for further research. It retains its wooden ramrod and despite being in storage for over 100 years this is in rather good condition having only been wiped over. Offered as is it appears fully sound and functional.
