Greener

Original Item: Only One Available. Offered here is a nice service used example of the 2nd Model Pattern 1853 Enfield Rifle Musket, as produced in England with brass butt plate, trigger guard and nose cap. The three steel barrel bands are held on with with band screws, only seen on the 2nd model. All of the other variations would use screw secured bands, which puts production of this approximately between 1856 and 1858.

The lock is marked GREENER at the bottom of the lock plate, and it is marked with a QUEEN'S CROWN to the rear of the hammer. However, there is NO V.R. under the crown. This indicates that this weapon was not intended for a British Military contract but was aimed at the Commercial and Overseas markets. At the time, tensions were rising in the United States over the issue of slavery, and many states would have welcomed a well-made British percussion rifle.

The top of the barrel breech is marked W. The right side of the butt stock is also marked with a maker cartouche that reads:

W. It still has the original rear sight, which is fully functional but has a crack in the right side "ramp". The lock is fully functional, holding correctly at half cock and firing at full. The cap nipple cone looks to have been replaced long ago. We checked the bore, and it still shows clear three groove rifling, with a partly bright finish. There is definitely some past oxidation in the grooves, and it looks to have seen a good amount of use.

The stock is in good original condition with a lovely aged color, looking to have been refinished some time in the late 19th or early 20th century. There are no major cracks or other damage, just the expected wear from service. Both sling swivels are present and movable, with the cleaning rod unfortunately missing.

A very interesting example of a P-1853 three band percussion rifle with a possible Civil War connection!
