This is an extremely nice, rare condition example of a complete and Confederate Captured Model 1858 “Smooth Side” Canteen from the American Civil War. Prior to 1858 canteens were made of wood or tin and came in a variety of forms and sizes. The two most prominent being the "barrel-type" made of wood with side slats like a barrel, and the "cheesebox-type" made of wood with a single wrap around side. Tin water bottles, similar to that used by the British Army, were also used, particularly towards the end of the 18th century.

This example appears to have been captured by a Confederate soldier and reissued with a C.S. stencil on the front. This marking certainly appears period and makes this a truly desirable piece.

The canteen retains the majority of its original cloth cover, but the cover has deteriorated heavily on the back, with much of the material worn away from rubbing against the metal over the years. The original canvas strap is looped through the three bales with the strap being tightened over the front of the canteen, and looking under these straps shows the brighter finish of the canvas which was covered, meaning this strap has been in this spot for a very long time, almost certainly since the war.

Some Civil War period canteens will have contractor information stamped into the side of the spout, however this one does not. The condition of the canteen is solid and being a captured example makes it a real treasure! As the Confederates had a much worse accoutrement industry, it was common for Confederate soldiers to capture and reuse the gear they found on their enemies. The cover, sling, stopper and chain are all in serviceable condition and present, making this a rare example.

A lovely, complete Confederate-captured canteen, ready for further research and display.

https://www.ima-usa.com/products/original-u-s-civil-war-confederate-captured-reissued-m1858-smoothside-canteen-with-cover-cloth-carrying-strap-c-s-stencil
