Manufactured by the firm of Boyle, Gamble and McFee of Richmond, VA., the adaptor enabled earlier manufactured rifles to be properly mounted with sword bayonets.  The firm made two models and this example is the rarer second model. Not all of the second model were marked however this one is, which makes it even rarer.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis excellent example retains the very scarce tightening screw, which is missing from the majority of examples on the market. Bayonet adapters enabled rifles such as the Model 1817 and Model 1841, as well as Southern-made military rifles, to be mounted with bayonets without weakening barrels by dovetailing in studs to engage the bayonet hilts, and they could help militarize civilian rifles bored out to military caliber as well. Boyle, Gamble and McFee made two models of adapter, both consisting of a solid band that has a slight bridge to enable it to slide over a front sight.
