Original U.S. Civil War Confederate .58 Caliber Cartridge Box with GAR Museum Tags - Indicative of Early CS Manufacture

Item Description

Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This gorgeous leather pouch is a homespun Southern copy of the typical Union “Pattern 1861” infantry cartridge box. The large outer flap has the slightly scallop-shaped lower edge typical of Civil War-era Infantry boxes. It exhibits light wear overall, but is in tremendous condition for its age, and the flap was not cut for a plate. One side of the box has an X scratched into the finish, which is often indicative of Confederate manufacture. The box has two GAR Museum tags, one on the back which reads CARTRIDGE BOX and one under the flap reading DONALD GIBBS, likely the Union soldier who donated the box to the museum.

Miraculously, the closing tab is still intact, as is the knob it attaches to. Both of the buckles are also retained on the bottom of the box. The inner flap is of thinner leather and retains both “ears, and covers the 2 retained cartridge tins. The stitching on the body of the box remains tight and unbroken. The back of the box retains its waist belt straps, which are in fantastic condition.

This is one of the most tremendous Civil War cartridge boxes we have offered, and the first Confederate example we’ve had. Its construction is entirely indicative of early Confederate manufacturing, and you would be hard-pressed to find a better example. Comes ready for further research and display!
