One-of-a-Kind. This is a tremendous example of what is often referred to as a “Horseman’s” or Farrier’s Knife, so named because it includes many of the tools a horseman requires, including a hoof pick. For this reason, they were popular with cavalrymen. This example was manufactured by Mappin & Webb of Sheffield, England, and was carried during the U.S. Civil War by Confederate Cavalryman John Mason, Company B, 2nd Virginia Cavalry. He often served as a scout for General James Ewell Brown "Jeb" Stuart, and was a native of Lynchburg, Virginia.

The knife is a great example which is marked on several of the blades:

TRUSTWORTHY
M
MAPPIN & WEBB
SHEFFIELD

Mappin & Webb is an international jewellery company headquartered in England, tracing its origins to a silver workshop founded in Sheffield in 1775; 250 years ago. One of Jonathan Mappin's great-grandsons, John Mappin, started his own business in London, Mappin & Company, in 1860, which became Mappin, Webb & Co. in 1862 after John Mappin was joined by his brother-in-law George Webb. The first Mappin & Webb store opened in 1860 at 77–78 Oxford Street, London (renumbered 160–162 in 1880), and the company's candelabras, fine silverware, and vanity products swiftly gained renown.

The knife has some oxidation and some of the pieces are difficult to pull out. With some TLC it would work great. There is a small piece of paper with the information about the knife and Mason, who could use more research!

From what the note says, John Mason, from Lynchburg, Virginia, served in Company B, 2nd Virginia Cavalry, also serving as a scout for General J.E.B.
