The Colt "Pocket Percussion" Model 1849 revolvers in .31cal are essentially scaled down versions of the larger Navy Model 1851 in .36cal, and were developed concurrently. The serial Number 267203 can be found on the barrel, frame, trigger guard and grip frame. The cylinder, and barrel wedge all have a shortened version of this number, making this a very nice "ALL MATCHING" revolver, totally un-messed with, and it's definitely a great one!

The serial number indicates indicates the year of manufacture as 1864, during the U.S. Civil War, so it almost certainly saw service during the conflict. As this revolver has a serial number over 187000, it has a six round .31 caliber cylinder, instead of the usual five. It also features a long 6" barrel, and is in nice tight condition with nice aged finish on the steel. There is also most of the original cylinder "Stagecoach Holdup Scene" engraving visible, along with a clear COLT'S PATENT over the serial number marking. This marking is also present on the side of the frame.

The Colt later production single address is still fully legible across the top of the octagonal barrel -

ADDRESS. COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA

It also has the correct COLTS PATENT on the left frame under the cylinder, and the grip frame is correctly marked 31CAL on the left hand side. The walnut grips are in very good shape, with a lovely color and the expected patina of age. They still have most of the original "Piano Varnish" finish that was applied to these at the factory.

The revolver functions well, with a crisp action and good cylinder indexing and lockup. The trigger is well adjusted and there is no issues with dry firing. The bore shows clear lands and grooves, with a partly bright finish showing light oxidation and wear. All of the cap nipples look to be original, and are not crushed and still clear. They do show some powder burn, as to be expected.

This is a very nice '49 Pocket dating from the late Civil War, a wonderful acquisition for any collection.
