The Colt \"Pocket Percussion\" Model 1849 revolvers in .31cal are essentially scaled down versions of the larger Navy Model 1851 in .36cal, and were developed concurrently. This is a lovely example, definitely one of the earliest that we have seen, and it is also in really good shape for its age. This impressive example features Serial Number \u003cstrong\u003e94867\u003c\/strong\u003e on the barrel, frame, cylinder (faint), trigger guard, grip, and grip frame, with shortened number \u003cstrong\u003e4867\u003c\/strong\u003e on the arbor pin and loading rammer. Only the barrel wedge is a fabricated replacement, which makes this a very nice \"MOSTLY MATCHING\" example of the M1849 Pocket revolver, without any major parts swapped out over the years!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe serial number indicates indicates the year of manufacture as \u003cstrong\u003e1854\u003c\/strong\u003e, only a few short years before the start of the U.S. Civil War, so it almost certainly saw service during the conflict, possibly on either side. Five shot percussion, .31 caliber with a 5\" barrel, and is in nice tight condition with a very nice peppery patina on the steel portions. The grip frame and trigger guard show a lovely \"mustard\" patina, with some areas retaining the original nickel plating. Additionally, about \u003cstrong\u003e40%\u003c\/strong\u003e of the original \u003cstrong\u003e\"Stagecoach Robbery\"\u003c\/strong\u003e cylinder engraving can still be seen in spite of the peppering, which is usually completely worn away. There are still traces of the \"COLT'S PATENT \/ No.\" marking next to the serial number. Often we see these with the markings completely removed from the cylinder, so this is a real treat!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Colt early two line address is marked in two lines across the top of the octagonal barrel, and is shows only light wear:-\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ccenter\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eADDRESS SAML COLT\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eNEW YORK CITY\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/center\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt also has the correct worn \u003cstrong\u003eCOLTS PATENT\u003c\/strong\u003e on the left frame under the cylinder, though there is no \"31CAL\" marking on the trigger guard, which is not uncommon. The walnut grips are in very good condition, with a lovely color and showing the usual period wear. They still have much of the original \"Piano Varnish\" finish that was applied to these at the factory, showing wear around the edges. There are still traces of the nickel plating on the grip frame, probably 10%. The brass front sight is still present and in very good condition, with just a bit of wear on the top.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe revolver functions just about flawlessly, with solid indexing and a firm cylinder lockup. We did not notice any of the usual finicky behavior we often see with revolvers of this age. The barrel to frame connection is solid, and does not show any signs of alteration to tighten up the joint. The bore is in very good condition, with a mostly bright finish showing clear lands and grooves, with some areas of past fouling and oxidation. It's very rare to see a percussion era revolver with a bore this good! All five cap nipple cones are clear, showing oxidation and fouling on the exterior from use.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is a lovely '49 Pocket dating from just before the Civil War, a great acquisition for any collection.
