Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. The Colt "Pocket Percussion" Model 1849 revolvers in .31cal are essentially scaled down versions of the larger Navy Model 1851 in .36cal, and were developed concurrently. The serial Number 213965 can be found (sometimes shortened) on the frame, barrel, trigger guard, grip frame, cylinder, and the loading rammer, which indicates the year of manufacture as 1862. The barrel wedge is an unmarked arsenal replacement.
This Colt revolver was made right the beginning of the U.S. Civil War, and almost certainly saw use during the conflict. These were quite popular as a backup weapon for when an officer's full size revolver ran out of loaded cylinders. Six shot percussion, .31 caliber with a short 4" barrel, all numbers matching except for the wedge. The revolver is worn overall, however the Colt single line address is still visible across the top of the octagonal barrel -
ADDRESS.COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA
The condition is nice but the Stage Coach scene on the cylinder is almost completely gone. The finish has work to a gray peppered patina. The walnut grips are present, though the left grip has a strip missing on the back, and both grips are missing some wood at the front toe of the grip. They still have some of the original "Piano Varnish" finish that was applied to these at the factory. The revolver cycles, however as with any revolver of this age it can be a bit finicky, and only cycles properly with the revolver pointed downward at least 45 degrees.
This is a very nice '49 Pocket dating from the Civil War in great used condition; a wonderful acquisition for any collection.
