Pond - Matching Serial 2115

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice private purchase .32cal Rimfire "Pocket" Revolver made by Lucius W. Pond in Worcester, Mass. He was one of many small producers located in the City, which was a hotbed of firearms development and production. The top of the octagonal barrel on this example is marked:

L.W. POND WORCESTER, MASS. PAT'D JULY 10.1860

POND started production in 1861 with his .32 Caliber breech loading Six Shot Revolver. This features a barrel tip up system allowing access to the cylinder which had to be exposed to be loaded and re-loaded. It has walnut flat bottom grips, no trigger guard but a protected "spur" trigger being encased in a steel slot. The barrel is octagonal and measures 5" in length. Many Union Officers carried such privately purchased "Support Revolvers" during the Civil War. Unfortunately without the Civil War to support the industry, Pond closed in 1870, as had happened with many other smaller makers.

The revolver is marked on the the grip frame under the grip, on the back of the barrel, and on the inside of BOTH grip scales with serial number 2115. The rear of the cylinder, cylinder lock spring, and mainspring bear shortened number 115, making this a very nice "ALL MATCHING" example, with no parts swapped out that we can see! The bottom of the grip is also marked with what is probably a "rack number: L / 382.

Condition is quite nice considering the age and amount of service this revolver must have seen, and the metalwork now has a lovely gray oxidized patina overall. There are areas of powder burn around the cylinder area, typical for black-powder cartridge revolvers. The bore shows lands and grooves, though the rifling is definitely worn, and there is overall oxidation. The Grips are quite nice, and look to be made of walnut, with just a bit of chipping around the edges and intact original varnish.

The revolver still breaks open correctly, allowing the cylinder to be removed for reloading. The revolver still cycles well, correctly advancing to the next chamber when the hammer is pulled. There is however wear to the cylinder lock, so the cylinder can continue to rotate even at full cock. Most likely the springs and internal workings need servicing for it to function correctly.

In very nice service used condition, rare and ready to display!

Specifications:

Year of Manufacture: circa 1861-65
Caliber: .32cal
Ammunition Type: Rimfire Cartridge
Barrel Length: 5 inches
Overall Length: 9 1/2 inches
Action: Single Only
Feed System: 6 Shot Revolver

NOTE: International orders of antique firearms MUST be shipped using UPS WW Services (courier).
