Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a size 7 1/8 U.S. Army Regulation Model 1895 enlisted forage cap. This was the U.S. Army's first transition to a visor cap after leaving the traditional kepi design as worn from the 1850s-early 1890s. This cap was very shortlived, being replaced by the more commonly encountered Model 1902 just seven years later.
Made of dark blue wool with enameled leather visor bound and a tarred leather chinstrap. The cap retains the original russet brown leather sweatband. Inside of crown is lined with black Polished Cotton, and is maker marked as follows:
Ridabock & Company
Trade Mark
New York
112 Fourth Ave/d Doors Behind 12th
The chinstrap is affixed to the cap by the means of two Gold gilt New York State Regulation “Excelsior” buttons to the sides.
The front of the cap has affixed a Medical Corps emblem, indicating that the original owner was a Hospital Steward or Corpsman. The emblem is screwback and made of German Silver.
Cap has been exposed to moth and shows wear mostly across the top but is in overall good solid condition.
