One-of-a-Kind. Brass hilted monster head hangers were in use with the British army from at least the mid-to-late 17th century. Sometimes they are fairly crude cast-brass and some with a little more discernible detail. By the mid-18th century, they seem to be quite similar in form.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is an extravagant example of an early American monsterhead mounted saber with a triple-fullered blade which is clearly engraved on both sides with the moon, the sun, and a heavenly arm protruding from the clouds clutching a saber. The grip of this example appears to have been professionally replaced some time ago, in the period correct configuration with a brass wire wrapping around the wood three times. Despite being replaced, the grip absolutely looks the part and displays beautifully.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe gorgeous 31¼” blade is in fantastic condition for its age, with some light staining and wear, and just a few small chips in the edge of the blade that are not even too noticeable. Both sides of the blade sport a triple-fuller which lasts roughly 20”. The engravings on both sides are completely evident of the period, and their condition is nothing short of phenomenal.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe hilt is of brass and has held up tremendously, without any significant damage or denting. The Monsterhead pommel is very nicely-detailed and is correct to the period.
