This is a lovely Civil War Federal sold shot iron cannonball, measuring approximately 4.5\" in diameter. This would indicate that it is a 12lb. size, for the Federal 12-pounder smoothbore cannon. These were widely available after the Civil War, as the days of solid shot were pretty much over, and the government disposed of them on the surplus market.
