Original Swiss Model 1899 Officer's Dress Sword with German Blade by WKC, Scabbard & Troddel Knot

Item Description

Original item: Only One available. This is a textbook example of an upmarket Swiss Model 1899 Officer's Dress sword, with a triple-etched German-made blade. The sword comes complete with its scabbard and a troddel knot tied to the grip. The blade, scabbard, and all of the fittings are fully nickel plated, making this a very attractive dress sword. The color of the troddel knot loop should identify the unit, however we have not been able to determine what type of officer used this sword.

The etching on the blade is fairly standard, with stands of arms, military motifs, and floral decorations. Both the engraving and the handguard bear the "Geneva Cross", the emblem of Switzerland. The grip is wire wrapped sharkskin shagreen, and in form the sword is quite similar to other officer's swords used around the world at the time. The steel handguard is symmetrical, and somewhat narrower than we seen on those from other countries. It is perforated and decorated with floral designs. The scabbard is fairly standard, with a single hanger ring and the rectangular loop on the rear for a belt hook.

The ricasso of the blade is marked with the retailer that imported the blade, who probably did the plating, etching, and fitting themselves.

SCHWEIZERISCHE
UNIFORMENFABRIK
BERN

The stamping, in German, simply translates to "Swiss Uniform Factory", which was located in Bern, the capital city of Switzerland.

The blade is marked on the reverse ricasso under the shell guard with the double trademark "King's Helmet" (Ritter-helm) alongside a "Kings's Head" (königskopf) logo of legendary German maker Weyersberg Kirschbaum & Cie of Solingen, over the firms initials of W.K & C.. This trademark is used on privately purchased and export blades in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and is absolutely correct for this bayonet. For more information please see J. Anthony Carter’s work GERMAN KNIFE AND SWORD MAKERS.

Condition is overall excellent, with just a bit of speckled oxidation on the scabbard and fittings. The blade has not been messed with, and the plating is close to 100%. The leather backed troddle does shoe a bit of age related wear, but nothing major.

In overall truly great condition, ready to display or add to your collection!
