This is an outstanding example of the scarce Spanish Model 1843 Artillery Pioneer short sword, manufactured at the Artilleria Fabrica de Toledo and dated 1848. This is the earliest dated example of the pattern that we have offered and is an impressive example of the heavy cutting tools carried by Spanish artillery pioneers and sappers during the mid-19th century. Examples of this model were still being carried by the Spanish during the Spanish-American War of 1898.

The sword has a substantial brass hilt with a flaming grenade motif incorporated into the pommel, a traditional emblem associated with artillery and related specialist troops. The hilt incorporates a straight integral brass crossguard measuring approximately 5 ¾ inches wide. The entire weapon measures approximately 22 inches overall.

The massive single-edged blade measures approximately 16 inches long and reaches approximately 2 ¼ inches wide at its broadest point. Its proportions give it the appearance of a very large military bolo or Bowie-type knife rather than a conventional infantry sidearm. The broad, heavy blade would have been well suited to the utilitarian cutting and clearing work expected of pioneer troops in addition to its function as a sidearm. The blade ricasso is inscribed to one side:

Artilleria
Fabrica de Tol’d

This denotes manufacture at the Artilleria Fabrica De Toledo. The opposite ricasso is stamped:

Ano de 1848

There is minor oxidation spotting but this example has held up very well overall with only minor chipping along the blade edge. The overall length is 22”

The original partial leather scabbard measures 13” in its current form with a brass throat that is now detached but still sits for display. It covers much of the blade with some sticking out at the top.

The clearly dated 1848 Toledo manufacture, distinctive artillery flaming grenade pommel, unusually broad 16-inch blade, and surviving portion of the original leather scabbard make this a particularly interesting early example of the Spanish Model 1843 pioneer sword. Its construction reflects the dual role of the weapon as both a military sidearm and a robust working tool for specialist troops, while the dated arsenal markings provide a strong point of identification and historical context.

Specifications:
Blade Length: 16"
Overall length: 22“
Scabbard length: 13”
Crossguard: 5 ¾”

https://www.ima-usa.com/products/original-spanish-american-war-spanish-model-1843-artillery-pioneer-heavy-short-sword-by-artilleria-fabrica-de-toledo-with-partial-scabbard-dated-1848
