This is a lovely example of a Spanish Artillery NCO’s sword with a lovely 27½” blade, stamped \u003cstrong\u003eARTa FABa DE TOLEDO 1891\u003c\/strong\u003e, for manufacture at Fabrica de Toledo in Spain in 1891. These swords were manufactured from the 1860s through the 1890s, being supplied to both Philippine and Cuban troops, seeing much combat against American soldiers during the Spanish-American War. This example has a perfect date for issue to troops during the SAW.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eToledo swords, for centuries, when the fight depended not only on the personal ability of the fighter, but also the perfection of his weapon. Toledo swords' exceptional steel were forged into the most feared arms in the world. Their extraordinary hardness made each of these Toledo swords an invincible force in the hands of an expert swordsman. All European armies knew the superior quality of Toledo and many great warriors relied only on sabers of Toledan provenance.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe blade is heavily oxidized in many spots, but the markings are still readable. The all-brass hilt is in good condition with a lovely patina. The overall length is 32¾”. This model of sword was one of the most popular bring-back items of U.S. soldiers during the war. The crossguard is stamped 18, possibly a unit designation, good potential for research!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe original brass-mounted leather scabbard is in partial condition, missing the brass throat mount completely, with the majority of the leather and the brass drag still retained. The drag has some loss of material. The leather has aged poorly and has some loss of finish, and some of the stitching on the back is heavily missing.
