Original Item: Only One Set Available. Several years ago IMA acquired a large bayonet collection from a very enthusiastic European collector. Some of these we have decided to sell in small groups, giving starting collectors a great chance to pick up a few bayonets to get started with collecting.
Here we have two very similarly designed German-made bayonets with scabbards, though one was later arsenal cut down and fitted with a shortened scabbard. They both have leather grips, leave spring bayonet locks, and are of the "Yataghan" design. This was a Turkish sword design, with a blade having a graceful double-bend that adds strength and rigidity, while keeping the grip and point in direct alignment for maximum thrusting efficiency.
The first bayonet, is for the Turkish Peabody Rifle, and is still the original full length. It has a hooked quillon, and partial scabbard missing the chape or drag. Most likely the scabbard shrank, causing it to fall off. It is in very good condition, an the blade ricasso is marked with a Königskopf (King's Head), the logo of Gebrüder Weyersberg, Waffenfabrik, which from 1859 onward operated a factory on Hochstrasse in the Ohligs area of the City of Solingen. They manufactured many bayonets for their export business.
The second bayonet is for the British P-1858 Two Band Short rifle, and originally was a very similar Yataghan design, but it was cut down and fitted with a new scabbard. We assume this was done for training purposes. It features a straight crossguard, and is also in very good condition.
