Only One Available. This is an outstandingly-scarce poster, the first of its kind we have offered, and the earliest Communist Russian poster we have ever offered. This poster was designed by Dmitry Moor, often considered the master of Soviet propaganda, and published by the Political Directorate of the Defense Council of the Republic in Moscow in 1920. The text reads “Comrades! Let's celebrate Red October with rifle and hammer!” as the soldier and proletariet kill a caricatured version of the “Black Baron” Pyotr Wrangel, a Russian military officer of the Baltic German nobility who served in the Imperial Russian Army and as the last commanding general of the White Army in the Russian Civil War.

The real name of this outstanding poster artist was Dmitry Stakhievich Orlov. He was born into a family of Cossack descent in Novocherkassk, on the Don River. He borrowed his unusual pseudonym, Moor, from Friedrich Schiller's drama "The Robbers."

Initially, he worked in a printing house, but his main training came from designing silent film posters. It was on posters that he developed his firm strokes, pithy images, and rough-hewn words—it's palpable. By the 1920s, Moor was already at the forefront of revolutionary propaganda posters, exhibiting at the "ROSTA Windows" exhibition center, publishing alongside Mayakovsky in the magazine "Novy Satirikon," and becoming a true visual aid for every generation of Soviet poster artists without exception. He died a year after the end of the Great Patriotic War.

The poster, which measures a great displayable 23¼ x 30¼”, is in great well-worn condition with heavy wear to the paper itself. There is one small tape repair in the center, but otherwise this example has held up very well. There are several small edge tears and overall creasing which really add to the character of this great piece. This would look outstanding framed with museum glass as the centerpiece of any early Soviet collection.

Comes ready for further research and display!

https://www.ima-usa.com/products/original-russian-revolution-1920-let-us-celebrate-red-october-communist-propaganda-poster-by-dmitry-moor-extremely-rare-23-x-30
