of large size beautifully constructed with correct silver hallmarks showing location of manufacture as Edinburgh, Scotland by AW (Andrew Wilke) in the year S (1824) measuring almost 15" in overall length and of some considerable weight.

HMS Asia was an 84-gun second rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, launched on 19 January 1824 at Bombay Dockyard. She was Codrington's flagship at the Battle of Navarino.

In 1858 she was converted to serve as a guardship, and in 1908 she was sold out of the navy. In 1826 H.M.S. Asia became the flagship for Rear Admiral Sir Edward Codrington who was appointed Commander-in-chief, Mediterranean Fleet and sailed on February 1st 1827 to take part in the Greek War of Independence from the Ottoman Empire of Turkey.

On October 20th 1827 Codrington, while commanding a British/French and Russian fleet defeated the combined fleets of both Turkey and Egypt at the BATTLE OF NAVARINO in the Mediterranean.

Codrington joined the Royal Navy in July of 1783 being promoted Lieutenant in 1793. He served on the 100 gun H.M.S. Queen Charlotte at the Battle of the Glorious First of June, 1894 after which he was promoted to Commander followed very shortly by Post-Captain. He was a favorite of Admiral Nelson and commanded H.M.S. Orion at the Battle of Trafalgar on October 21st 1805. All in all he had a glorious career and became a full Admiral in January 1837. He died in 1851.

With such a glamorous record one rather imagines that this fine Sterling Silver Ladle was part of Rear Admiral Codringtons service and was undoubtedly used in the Senior Officer's Mess during his tenure on HMS ASIA. A terrific item of British Naval history with great additional research potential.
