Machnicki\u003c\/b\u003e, author of \u003ci\u003eAt Arm's Length: Trench Clubs and Knives\u003c\/i\u003e and other works relating to bayonets, trench weapons, and militaria. Despite the extensive corrosion, the distinctive hooked quillon remains intact, making this a desirable surviving example of the early Pattern 1907 configuration.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe blade measures approximately \u003cb\u003e16 ¾ inches long\u003c\/b\u003e and retains the standard single-edged form with fuller associated with the Pattern 1907 bayonet. Overall length is approximately \u003cb\u003e21 ½ inches\u003c\/b\u003e, with a crossguard measuring approximately \u003cb\u003e3 1\/8 inches\u003c\/b\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe heavily oxidized ricasso retains some faint marking outlines. We can make out the \u003cb\u003e1907 \u003c\/b\u003emodel designation along with the \u003cb\u003eCrown \u003c\/b\u003eabove it. There are faint bits of the bayonet date and the maker marking, but not enough for us to identify. The markings could likely be transcribed with enough work.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe wood grips are still retained with heavy wear from the extreme oxidation, but they are still solid. There is some minor woodworm-damage in the grips with small holes on both sides, giving the bayonet a great look. The bayonet catch is now entirely frozen in oxidation, and we would not recommend trying to get it to move.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe hooked quillon was originally intended to assist in trapping or controlling an opponent’s weapon during close combat. In practice, this feature proved unnecessary and added complexity to the design. On \u003cb\u003eOctober 29, 1913\u003c\/b\u003e, approval was granted to eliminate the hook from British production, creating the familiar plain-crossguard form used throughout most of WWI. The official model designation itself did not change.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe bayonet came directly from the personal collection of \u003cb\u003eDavid F. Machnicki\u003c\/b\u003e. Machnicki is the author of \u003ci\u003eAt Arm's Length: Trench Clubs and Knives\u003c\/i\u003e, published in 2012, as well as other reference material concerning military edged weapons and bayonets. This collection provenance adds an important documented chapter to the history of the piece.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis example is particularly noteworthy for the combination of its \u003cb\u003eintact hooked quillon, surviving Crown and 1907 markings, original wood grips, relic battlefield-style appearance, and provenance from the David F. Machnicki collection\u003c\/b\u003e.
