This is an original German .72 caliber, Potsdam Model 1809\/31 smoothbore, single-shot muzzleloader in very good condition. Musket measures a total length of almost 57\" with a 41¼\" long barrel and is a conversion from flintlock to percussion. There are signs of powder burn at the breach. In very presentable condition, with a great patina of age that has been cleaned and polished a bit, to make this an excellent display piece. Also, unlike most that we have seen, this musket still retains its original sling swivels!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe lockplate surface has a nice patina as well, and exhibits a slightly peppery look from scattered fine rust pitting. Lockplate is a curved tail that terminates into a small teat that differentiates it from the later 1839 model. Markings are standard with none found behind the hammer. Forward of the hammer, the markings are clear and feature the Prussian crown over markings and stamped \u003cb\u003e\u003ci\u003ePotsdam \/ G. L. \u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBarrel left facet is stamped \u003cstrong\u003e1837\u003c\/strong\u003e and below it is serial number \u003cstrong\u003e4208\u003c\/strong\u003e, followed by\u003cstrong\u003e 71\u003c\/strong\u003e. Additionally there is \u003cstrong\u003e103\u003c\/strong\u003e marked on the top barrel facet. Almost all of the brass fittings are marked with \u003cstrong\u003e23\u003c\/strong\u003e, so that they can be easily matched at arsenal. There are also additional proofs and markings on the barrel knoxform. Mechanics are strong and crisp. Barrel is secured to the stock via three brass bands retained by springs. Upper brass band is double-strapped, and has the front sight on the rear strap.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAll brass wears a mellow bronze patina. Finials of the trigger guard and the toe of the butt plate terminate in distinct three-pointed ends. Butt plate stamped with the date of manufacture, \u003cstrong\u003e1837\u003c\/strong\u003e, and is stamped below that with regimental information: \u003cstrong\u003e1ß 19L.WR \/ 4C\u003c\/strong\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack walnut stock with its recessed cheek piece is handsome and strong. Wood surface is dark but has a great patina, with the expected dents and other wear from long service.  The included bayonet is in good condition, and fits behind the retainer on the nose fitting.
