This was a time when an empire was built where the sun truly never set, however to build and maintain such an empire, numerous armed conflicts were required.

Here we have a lovely North Indian Flintlock Wall gun from the INDIAN MUTINY, or SEPOY REBELLION, which lasted from 1857 to 1859. It was captured and brought back after the conflict. The bore is about 18mm, or 13 bore, a sizeable weapon, and it comes equipped with an ornate wood and iron bipod, which allowed just about any type of terrain to become a "wall."

Rampart Guns, often called Wall guns, were large caliber smooth-bore muskets that were used in the 16th through 18th centuries by defending forces to break the advance of enemy troops. They were too heavy to be fired from the shoulder and so were usually rested on window ledges or low walls on fortified ramparts surrounding forts and castles, hence the names.

This example is a bit smaller than those used in European conflicts, measuring 51 inches in overall length, with a 15 inch heavy walled barrel. The top of the barrel has much decorative brass inlay, really adding to the effect. The inlays go all the around the "cannon style" muzzle as well. There are some markings on the tang of the barrel, as well as on the lock plate, but these were most likely imitation markings added during construction, as we cannot find any references regarding them. We checked the lock, and it holds correctly at half cock, firing at full.

The fittings on the gun are all of copper or bronze, including the trigger guard and butt plate. There is a large bulge in the fore stock where the bipod is mounted, which measures 21 inches long and 9 1/2 inches wide at the base. The bipod has a lovely curve to it, and is fitted with perforated iron and some copper components.

A lovely North Indian Wall gun, with a very decorative bipod.
