The fuze cover, pin and pull string are gone, however. The fuze is still attached to the screw off top, but the screw off top can no longer be removed to inspect the interior, likely due to seizure. The detonator tube is gone.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe grenade body still retains much of the original black paint. The fuze housing still unscrews so that the interior can be inspected, but the screw off top is seized. The fuse on this example is actually marked at the very bottom with a Japanese date:\u003cstrong\u003e 7 六 十 昭\u003c\/strong\u003e. This marking is written right to left, and would be read: \u003cstrong\u003eSHOWA \u003c\/strong\u003e(current reigning emperor) Juu-Roku Nen (16th year of reign - \u003cstrong\u003e1941\u003c\/strong\u003e) 7th Month (\u003cstrong\u003eJuly\u003c\/strong\u003e). The dated fuze housing remains present. The fuze cover, safety pin, pull cord, and detonator tube are missing. There is some faint white lettering on the bottom, and there are a few chips in the body material resulting in material loss.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe main fuze assembly can still be removed from the grenade body, while the upper threaded portion is seized and should be left as found rather than forced apart.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe combination of the original Type 97 solid-base fragmentation body, surviving dark finish, fuze housing, and clearly readable July 1941 Shōwa date makes this a strong representative example of the standard Japanese hand grenade used during the middle years of World War II.
