Original Japanese WWII Linen "Meatball" Flag with Painted Character - USGI Bring Back (29" x 26")
Original Item: One-of-a-kind. Purchased directly from veteran's estate. This hand painted cloth flag has one character in the middle of the Sun, often called a "Meatball". The flag measures approximately 29" x 26". Cloth seems to be linen, with the red sun dyed onto the center. Flag is in good condition and is the real deal a genuine USGI "bring back"! There are some small tears and overall staining, as expected of a flag of this age. Both leather corner reinforcements are still intact, complete with the cloth tie straps.
The Japanese call their country's flag hinomaru, which translates literally to "sun-round", referencing the red circle on a white field. These were hung to be read right to left, the opposite of most western flags.
