This is an exceptionally desirable original Japanese Type 91 fragmentation grenade, retaining the removable propellant container screwed into the base, a component frequently missing from surviving examples. The grenade is completely inert and intended for historical display only.

The grenade is totally inert and is unable to be rendered live again. It is in complete compliance per the current BATF standards on ordnance. Not Available For Export.

The Type 91, or 九一式手榴弾 (Kyūichi-shiki Teryūdan), was adopted by the Imperial Japanese Army in 1931 as a multi-purpose fragmentation grenade that could be thrown by hand, fired from a grenade discharger, or adapted for rifle launching.

The grenade body appears a bit oxidized and does not retain any of the red paint on the top of the fuze. The fuze on this example is actually marked with a Japanese date: 7 十 昭. This would be read as Showa 10, for 1935, with 7 being the month, July. The fuse housing retains the detonator tube on the underside.

The 1935 date places manufacture several years before the beginning of the Pacific War and during the period when the Type 91 was still one of the principal fragmentation grenades of the Imperial Japanese Army.

The surviving fuze assembly, dated component, detonator tube, segmented body, and particularly the removable propellant container make this a notably complete representative example of the early Type 91 configuration.

The combination of its apparent July 1935 fuze date, original Type 91 segmented body, surviving fuze and detonator tube, and scarce removable propellant container gives this inert grenade considerable value as a study example of the Imperial Japanese Army's unusual multi-purpose grenade system developed during the interwar period and carried forward into World War II.

https://www.ima-usa.com/products/original-japanese-wwii-inert-type-91-hand-fragmentation-grenade-dated-1935-with-booster-inert
