This is a wonderful Italian medal commemorating the service of the 1st Army during WWI. The medal has no significant damage and the enamel work\/finish is retained very well. This is actually a beautiful medal! The 1st Army was a Royal Italian Army field army, in World War I, facing Austro-Hungarian and German forces, and in World War II, fighting on the North African front. During World War I, the 1st Army bore the responsibility of a long front from Stelvio Pass on the Swiss-Austrian Italian tri-border to the Asiago plateau. It successfully resisted the Austro-Hungarian Strafexpedition. Its sector was later reduced, limiting its role to the defense of the Trentino borders and the Verona area.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Cross was instituted in 1924. Just like the majority of such crosses of the various Italian Units, it was produced by a number of different makers, in various designs while the recipients of the award had to purchase it themselves. This is the rare example by L. Fassino - A. Caly of Torino (Turin).
