It is the \"traditional\" fighting sword of ancient India, with examples going back 400\/500 years. The word tulwar itself originates from the Sanskrit word taravāri (Sanskrit: तरवारि ) which means \"one-edged sword\". The style originated alongside other curved swords such as the Persian shamshir, the Turkish kilij and the Afghan pulwar, all such swords being originally derived from earlier curved swords developed in Turkic Central Asia.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis fine example measures 34 1\/2\" in overall length and is fitted with a very curved blade of 29\" which is really substantially made. It is quite thick, and has a long deep fuller down the middle of each side, with a smaller decorative fuller closer to the spine. The edge is still quite sharp in places, so care should be taken. It looks like the blade was at one time even wider, but has been sharpened down a lot, so it may have been a European blade that was repurposed. The spine is also very square and flat, not typically seen on these tulwards, but common on European blades.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe characteristic hilt has the traditional \"disc\" on the pommel, with a skull crusher point on the end..
