Original Item: Only One Available. A kindjal (translated from the Russian Кинжал) is a double-edged dagger often with a single off-set groove on each face of the blade. The shape of the weapon is similar to the ancient Greek Xiphos, the Roman Gladius, or the Scottish dirk; and has been used as a secondary weapon in Georgia and the Caucasus since ancient times. 

This presents very nicely and is somewhat older than those usually encountered. Traditionally these were carried by the Cossacks, the South Russian Cavalry, these are wicked doubled edged daggers of very traditional South Russian style.

This example has a blade length of 18" and is 24 1/2" in overall length. The grip is made from wood and is in the typical shape, with VERY large securing rivets on either end. These almost serve as protection they are so long. The tang of the blade also has a small protrusion that comes out of the pommel.

The single fullered blade on this example is unlike any other we have seen, and we have not been able to fully account for it unfortunately. It has a very unique surface pattern, which leads us to believe that it is made of a type of "Wootz" crucible steel. More noticeable however is the 'Hooked Back" profile of the blade, which is single edged for most of the length. The other side is inlet 1/2 of an inch and is flat, with either end of the inlet having almost a "hook", topped by a short serration. There are some protrusions in the inletted area, so this was definitely done by design.

We surmise it may have been designed to catch the blade of an opponent, or it may have a purpose that is unknown. Definitely an interesting item worthy of further research. This would make a great addition to any Imperial Russian Collection.
