At first we thought maybe it was a very early rifle, but there is no twist at all in the bore, just 7 sides from the breech to the muzzle.

It is marked on the lock plate with the signature of CASPAR SCHLERZ which was an abbreviation used by CASPAR SCHLEGMILCH, who worked in ST. PETERSBURG between 1750 and 1770. The family dates back to HANS JAKOB SCHLEGMILCH of VIENNA who worked there in 1670 and clearly saw the opportunity of the opening of IMPERIAL RUSSIA under CZAR PETER THE GREAT in the early 1700s. By 1840 the family had expanded again, this time to SUHL in Germany with another CASPAR. Finally the family opened in NEW YORK and CHICAGO with HERMAN SCHLEGEMILCH in 1830, followed by several other locations in the U.S.A right up until 1903.

This is a fine brass mounted flintlock holster pistol with Mask Pommel Butt Cap and heavily embossed on every surface. Similarly the open work "Dragon" side plate and the brass escutcheon are so decorated, including the forward tang of the Trigger guard and the rear of the ram rod pipes. The 12 3/4" barrel has three brass decorative plaques laid into the surface, the major one displaying the Imperial Russian Double Headed Eagle to center.

The early lock features an unsupported (un-bridled) powder pan, as well as a roller frizzen spring. The lock functions, but definitely has a worn tumbler. It will not engage at half cock, and will fire from the half cock position. The lock screws are also a bit loose, so the lock can shift a bit when being cocked.

The original full length wood stock, made from walnut or some similar wood, terminates with a horn or polish black Ebony hardwood nose cap. The pistol still retains an all wood ramrod that has been in place for a very long time.

Overall an exciting Flintlock Holster pistol of the Imperial Russian Court dating to the middle of the 1700's.
