This is a very scarce original Japanese police-style dirk dating from the early 20th century through the WWII period, and only the second example of this type we have offered. The dagger is attributed to police or police NCO use and retains its original scabbard, working scabbard lock, and an especially attractive wire-wrapped sharkskin grip.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe dirk bears a 12 5\/8” blade and is 16 3\/4” overall. There is some minor oxidation spotting, and the blade is not very sharp. The hilt has a partial S shaped guard without a hole in the end that a sword knot would go through. It has a back strap with no decoration and a rounded pommel. There is no provision for a sword knot on the pommel of the dagger.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe scabbard measures 13” and is missing its hanging ring. There is heavy denting and some paint loss.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJapanese police dirks were produced in several patterns and variations over the late Meiji, Taishō, and early Shōwa periods, and surviving examples can differ considerably in guard shape, grip treatment, scabbard fittings, and rank-associated details.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe combination of the sharkskin grip, surviving wire wrap, plain official-style fittings, working scabbard lock, and original scabbard makes this a particularly interesting example of Japanese law-enforcement edged weaponry from the first half of the 20th century.
