This is a rough but representative original Imperial German WWI Prussian M1915 enlisted / NCO Pickelhaube shell in fair, as-is condition. The M1915 was the final general-issue Pickelhaube pattern introduced before the widespread transition to steel helmets, and it is distinguished by its use of gray oxidized steel fittings in place of the brass, Tombak, and other non-ferrous hardware seen on earlier models.

This helmet features an oxide plated steel frontplate (wappen), and the crown of this leather helmet displays a vented enlisted spike mounted on a steel baseplate, which is removable but the interior construction is damaged so it is very loose on the base, so it spins around very loosely. There is also a small adjustable vent on the spine that supports the rear skirt, only seen on the enlisted helmets, which is able to be moved with force. The front wappen features a crowned Prussian state eagle clutching a scepter and orb in its claws, over the King's motto, MIT GOTT FÜR KOENIG UND VATERLAND (With God for King and Country, i.e. Prussia). The wappen is attached via a string tied between the two holes, recently done, through two new holes.

The helmet is missing both cockades and the chinstrap. The helmet shell itself has some wear to the boiled leather but the shape is still overall solid. The original liner is almost entirely gone with two and a half tongues left. There are no easily readable markings besides a stamp on the rear visor, a 10 / II.

The exterior of the helmet shell is in overall good shape, but there is heavy crazing to the sides and edges. The front and rear visors are in fair shape, and the trim on the front visor is still well-attached, but the stitching is heavily worn with loss and looseness in the front.

The combination of the gray steel M1915 fittings, surviving Prussian Wappen, removable enlisted spike, rear ventilation slider, front visor trim, and 10 / II marking gives this shell solid representative value as a late-war Prussian Pickelhaube. Its rough condition also provides a clear look at the construction and wear commonly encountered on heavily used or long-stored examples from the final phase of Imperial German leather helmet production.

https://www.ima-usa.com/products/original-imperial-german-wwi-prussian-m1915-em-nco-pickelhaube-spiked-helmet-shell-as-is
